Enthusiastic reception for PowerGen redevelopment proposals
More than 300 people turned out last week to see initial plans for the proposed regeneration of the former ‘PowerGen’ site, Shirley, which covers around ten acres and is located at the junction of Stratford Road and Haslucks Green Road.
The proposals were shown to the public for the first time at an exhibition held in the recently completed entrance atrium of The Royal British Legion Club in the brand new Parkgate shopping centre on Thursday 11th, Friday 12th and Saturday 13th September.
The public exhibition was hosted by Jonathan Cox and Robert Birch of developer Shirley Advance. Visitors were able to quiz the development team and complete feedback forms, which will be collated and reviewed before the plans are refined ahead of submission to the Planning Committee. A second exhibition will be held on 25th – 27th September, for those who were unable to attend the first.
Senior representatives of The ExtraCare Charitable Trust were also present to explain details of the Charity’s own proposals to deliver about 260 apartments within a high quality Retirement Village on the main frontage of the overall site.
Otherwise, Shirley Advance intends to promote a mixture of one/two bedroom apartments and two/three bedroom houses on the majority of the remaining site with a possible combination of residential properties for private purchase and rental.
In accordance with current Solihull Council planning policies, no less than 40% of the overall number of residential units will be made available on an ‘affordable’ basis, with an appropriate mix of shared ownership and rented opportunities.
There will also be a new Asda filling station and other possible commercial uses on the site.
Robert Birch said, “We are really pleased with the feedback from everyone who attended our exhibitions last week. Local people were generally very supportive of our proposals and it was great to finally get the process for this long awaited project underway.
“We have learnt a lot about specific issues that we will be able to take into account as we continue to develop the scheme.”
The Public Exhibitions will be repeated next week (wc 22nd September) and local people are encouraged to attend to see the proposals for themselves and to provide any feedback directly to the development team.
Shirley Advance and ExtraCare will return to The Royal British Legion Club in Parkgate as follows:-
- Thursday 25th September from 5pm until 8pm
- Friday 26th September from 5pm until 8pm
- Saturday 27th September from 10am until 4pm
